Watching your weight doesn't have to mean that you can't have any fun. Here's everything you need to know about calories and carbs in vodka. Vodka typically does not carry carbohydrates as long as you avoid any of the sweet flavored types. Though vodka carries almost no nutritional value as it does not contain protein or fats, minerals or fiber — vodka does have calories.

1. How many calories are in vodka?

The amount of energy in vodka, measured in calories, is quite significant.

Generally, 100 grams of vodka (3.5 ounce) contains 235 calories. This figure differs depending on the brand, type, and strength of the specific vodka. To put it in context, 100 grams of vodka (3.5 ounce) with 235 calories has around 5 times as many calories compared to 100 grams of oranges.

2. Does vodka have carbs?

To put it simply, vodka is a purified alcohol which is diluted with water to a desired strength.

There may be trace levels of carbohydrates, since many vodkas are produced with wheat, raw rye, potatoes or corn. While further processing and rectification of the alcohol leads to the loss in nutritional value of these agricultural ingredients, part of the carbohydrates may remain.

On average, there are about 0.4 grams of carbs per 100 grams of vodka. But this amount of carbohydrates is so small that it is possible to say that there are zero carbohydrates in vodka.

Additional ingredients affect vodka's carbohydrate content and total energy value. To improve the flavors in a drink, some manufacturers may add sugar syrup, honey, or amino acids — all of which increase carbohydrates and calorie levels.

Are there carbs in vodka?

Distilled spirits, like vodka, rum, whiskey, and gin, only contain alcohol, so they have zero carbs. If you're tracking your carbohydrate intake, vodka is an optimal choice.

Vodka contains zero carbohydrates.

Though it is made from foods rich in carbohydrates, such as potatoes or wheat, the fermentation and distillation process strips these foods of nearly all of their nutrients, including carbohydrates. Most of the sugars and starches in the original foods are converted into ethanol.

3. Vodka carbs compared to other types of alcohol

When it comes to distilled spirits, however, vodka is on par with the other spirits like whiskey, gin, tequila and rum, according to the USDA.

Other distilled liquors, like rum, whiskey, gin, and tequila contain zero carbohydrates. Of course, it depends on the brand and the proof.

Some brands of rum, for example, contain added spices and sugar that change the flavor and also the nutritional content.

Most distilled spirits contain roughly 96–98 calories per 1.5-ounce serving and no carbohydrates.

4. What determines the number of calories in vodka?

Calories are a conventional unit of energy measurement, and are necessary for the human body to maintain strength, proper metabolism and overall vitality. Humans obtain this energy by eating food.

On average, the caloric value of 100 grams of vodka ranges from 200 to 255 calories. 235 calories is considered to be the standard average.

Below are some factors that influence vodka's calorie content.
  • The amount of added sugars and additional sweeteners or juices
In general, the higher the concentration of these ingredients in a vodka drink compared to pure vodka, the higher the calorie count. This applies not only to vodka, but to any alcohol.

    Alcohol concentration, strength
It is worth noting that drinks with a higher alcohol concentration will be stronger — and consequently, will contain more calories. In the U.S., vodka has a standard strength of 40% ABV (80 proof) but can range from 37.5% (74 proof) to 56% alcohol (112 proof) and even more.

7. Calorie content of vodka compared to other alcohols

For those who are afraid of gaining weight by drinking vodka, it is worth noting that there are fewer calories in vodka compared to other alcoholic drinks.

On average, vodka contains slightly fewer calories than cognac (239 calories) and calvados (325 calories), and significantly less calories than most liquors. The calorie content of liquors is always higher — 300 calories per 100 milliliters which is one and a half times higher than that of vodka.

However, vodka does contain almost three times as many calories as dry wines — 235 calories versus 70-100 calories per 100 milliliters for each respective alcohol.

8. Calorie content of vodka-based cocktails

  • Blue Lagoon 350 milliliters 150 - 195 calories

9. Glycemic index of vodka

The glycemic index (GI) measures the ability for carbohydrates in foods to affect blood glucose levels. Carbohydrates with a low GI are digested more slowly by the body, and therefore cause smaller and slower increases in both glucose and insulin levels.

Vodka contains virtually no carbohydrates, so the GI of vodka is zero.

However, this does not mean that alcoholic drinks do not affect glucose levels in blood. The body's reaction may differ depending on each individual's health characteristics.

10. Does drinking vodka cause weight gain?

Vodka, like any other alcohol, supplements daily calories. Consuming this alcohol most definitely increases caloric intake. Furthermore, while under the influence of alcohol, parts of the brain that control cravings may be inhibited. This can lead to binge eating, resulting in an excess intake of calories beyond recommended daily values.

For vodka lovers who are on a diet, it is worth noting that drinking pure vodka with no additives is the most low-calorie way to consume the alcohol. Choosing not to add sweeteners, syrups, or juices to vodka may aid in dieting efforts. If you want to drink a low-calorie cocktail with vodka it may be worth considering prioritizing additives such as the following:

  • lime or lemon
  • iced tea
  • mineral water with stevia
  • fresh mint leaves
As with everything in life, moderation is key. Cheers!

How much does 1 liter of vodka weigh?

When comparing the calorie content of vodka alongside other food products, it should be noted that 1 liter (33.8 fluid ounce) of vodka does not equate to 1000 grams (35.2 ounce).

While 1 liter of plain water weighs 1000 grams, the weight of alcohol differs from that of water. One liter of ethanol is 33% lighter than water, and only weighs 789 grams. That is why the weight of 1 liter of vodka with 40% spirit (80 proof) is 950 grams not 1000 grams.

Also worth bearing in mind is the fact that vodka weight varies depending on its strength, which is its alcohol percentage or ratio of alcohol to water. Vodkas with 40% strength (80 proof) are most popular, and therefore this percentage is considered a standard reference. However, there are also stronger vodkas. In general, the stronger the vodka the less it weighs.
